On Wednesday morning, WWE announced that the company will be bringing back the infamous brand split, that will be implemented on July 19th. There’s been a ton of speculation on how this edition of the brand split will look.
On Wrestling Observer Radio yesterday, Dave Meltzer stated that several sources within the company have stated that there will indeed be two top championships for each respective brand. Unlike other news outlets, we’ll make note of the fact that Meltzer said that this can obviously change over time and the company could decide to go with just one World Title.
During Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez also stated that details about this brand split will change “a thousand times” from now until July 19th, but did say that the plan is to have the United States and Intercontinental Championships divided up onto Raw and Smackdown, respectively, but that the Women’s Championship and division will be given to one brand in particular; to which brand is unclear. Alvarez also said that there will be a ton of NXT call-ups as well, to fill spots on both rosters.
Again, Meltzer and Alvarez urged the idea that all these things can change over the next two months. It’s being said that Vince McMahon has “a million ideas” about how he wants to execute this brand split. And history has shown us that when this happens, he tends to change his mind frequently.
As of now, the WWE Draft date is scheduled for July 11th on Monday Night Raw in Detroit, Michigan.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision to announce the brand split has been talked about for the last 2-3 weeks, and was announced to officials at Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view. It’s being said that almost all of the current talent have no idea which brand they are going to be placed on, including several “top stars,” according to Bryan Alvarez.
Details are still very raw, so we’ll keep you posted on this story as we get closer to July.
