In a strange twist of events on the January 14, 2019 episode of Braun Strowman was removed from the Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble. Strowman chased Baron Corbin throughout the entire backstage area & pulled the door off of Mr. McMahon’s limousine in order to get to him. McMahon then walked up and took away Braun’s championship match!
It was announced later that Drew McIntyre, John Cena, Baron Corbin & Finn Balor would compete in a Fatal Four-Way Match to figure out who the new challenger would be.
Balor had to first defeat Jinder Mahal, which he did rather easily, in order to qualify for the match. He was then able to overcome the odds later in the night, pinning John Cena to become the #1 Contender to Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship.
