With the announcement of Baron Corbin as Kurt Angle’s farewell opponent at Wrestlemania, the collective groans of disappointment consumed wrestling fans everywhere. It was nowhere near the match fans (myself included especially since I will be at Wrestlemania) wanted or were hoping for.
Obviously, fans were hoping the announcement would have been John Cena (Raw is in Boston next week, fingers crossed for a swerve) which would have brought their careers full circle. But it doesn’t seem to be, at least for now.
Assuming the match stays Angle vs. Corbin, I can honestly tell you that despite the backlash, the match from a story perspective makes the most sense in more ways that one.
Allow me to explain.
For starters it finally brings closure to the Raw GM storyline that started last summer. Corbin became an issue for Angle once he turned into the Constable. For all the times it was rumored to come head to head, it never did. The handful of time they did face off, Corbin would come out on top. This ties into Angle’s comment on Raw about really wanting to beat one person in particular.
Angle can go over. Sure, the match with Cena is more attractive, but odds are Angle would end his career losing to John Cena. This match here gives Angle the chance to avenge the losses to Corbin and go out on top.
Now in the event Corbin were to win, that would give Corbin, like him or hate him, a massive rub. The heat on Corbin after beating Angle would be inmessurable.
Like I said earlier, this is far from any wrestling fan’s “dream scenario” but from a business perspective it might just the right scenario.
What are your thoughts on the match?
