Everyone loves a good comeback story. And that is what I believe this will be for Caz XL.
However, in order to tell a good comeback story, we have to discuss why a comeback is needed in the first place.
The man formerly known as Big Cass in the WWE is on the comeback trail and the entire industry better watch out.
Recently, Caz showed up at an independent wrestling company called SWE, and looks to be in tremendous physical condition!
Caz XL has had a tumultuous run in the wrestling business since his career began at Johnny Rodz Wrestling School in Brooklyn, New York.
Growing up a stone’s throw away in Queens, New York, Caz was on the fast track to a career that didn’t involve administering chokeslams to his opponents.
Instead, it looks like Caz was on his way to work in the medical field or grow a local ticket brokerage that he founded.
After about 2 years training and working for Rodz promotion, World of Unpredictable Wrestling, Caz was signed to WWE Developmental territory called Florida Championship Wrestling. Soon thereafter, FCW was rebranded to NXT.
Caz started off as many young wrestlers do: paying their dues. He took his bumps, overcame injuries and plied his craft until he was good enough to be afforded an opportunity to climb the card. A trio was eventually formed with Enzo Amore and Carmella.
These three set NXT audiences on fire; eventually being a main focus of NXT as the brand started traveling all over the world.
Let’s skip to the main roster.
After an overwhelmingly popular run in NXT, the team of “Enzo & Cass” hit the main roster and were pushed IMMEDIATELY! The duo was aligned with John Cena on Pay-Per-View and put right into the Tag Team Title mix.
However, an eventual haphazard heel turn transpired which left the duo split. And remember when I mentioned Cass was aligned with Enzo & Carmella in NXT? Well, Carmella was broken away from the trio as a solo competitor as soon as they got called up to the main roster.
Additionally, Carmella was also in a real life, serious relationship with Big Cass. This relationship came to a screeching halt at some point in 2017, and I won’t get into the details pertaining to why.
Not only did that real life relationship come to a halt, but his tag team with Enzo came crashing down as well, brother. WWE made the very odd decision to split the duo when they were on the literal rise in popularity.
They fed off of each other, hid each others “weaknesses” and overall were on the path to be an all-time great WWE tag team. At the time, nobody got the audience fired up like Enzo & Cass did. Nobody.
When they split this tag team, it was like splitting up two young brothers who had no direction or idea what to do with their lives. That’s what it seemed like, anyway.
From an outsider’s perspective, and you can hear much more about it in Caz XL’s interview w/ Chris Van Vilet, it looked like Big Cass’ WWE run was crumbling.
After his split with Enzo, he tore his ACL in a match with his former partner on the post SummerSlam episode of RAW. This put Cass on the shelf for 8 months. Upon returning, it wasn’t long until he was released from his contract with WWE. There are many details relating to his controversial exit from WWE, but we can talk about that another time.
After his release, things just seemed to get worse for Caz XL.
He relied heavily on drugs and alcohol, suffered a seizure backstage at a “House of Hardcore” event, had a backstage altercation with Joey Janela & Pat Buck as a WrestlePro event leading to him being thrown out of the building…burning bridges seems to be an understatement. Could those bridges be rebuilt?
I needed to write all of that to express how pumped I am that Caz XL seems to be back to a focused, savage pro wrestler.
He’s had help from Diamond Dallas Page. DDP has been instrumental in helping many professional wrestlers, and people in general, overcome their demons and get refocused on what life is all about. In this case, Caz XL went to DDP for help with his anxiety and depression.
It looks to me like a return to the spotlight is imminent for Caz XL. He looks great, seems refocused and is ONLY 34 years old. In reality, he’s got at least 10 more years to absolutely crush it in the professional wrestling business.
With that being said, it is rumored that Caz XL will be debuting for Impact Wrestling soon, according to unsubstantiated rumors posted by a site called Inside Wrestling.
If this is true, it is a HUGE signing for Impact Wrestling…literally!
To wrap this up, we needed to tell the story of the downfall to truly understand what this comeback story will mean to Caz XL. Not only does he look to be in the best shape of his life physically, but one has to believe that he is in the best mental shape in a long time.
