In the aftermath of Okada vs. Omega, PWP Nation’s Caden Moran discusses how the main event of Wrestle Kingdom XI has redefined professional wrestling
Professional wrestling is a beautiful spectacle, isn’t it?
I risked sleep and school to stay up and watch New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s biggest event of the year, Wrestle Kingdom XI and even though I was insanely tired for the rest of the day, it was completely worth it and that is due to the phenomenal main event of Kenny Omega versus Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
We are only a few days into 2017 and many wrestling fans around the world, including myself, believe there is absolutely no way Omega vs. Okada will ever be topped this year as the best match. The match was destined to be one of the best from the moment Kenny Omega won the G1 Climax tournament last year and the hype going into Wednesday’s event was all justified.
From the storytelling to the many false finishes, Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada not only set the tone for professional wrestling in 2017, but they did something that not many guys can claim they did, and it’s that Omega and Okada redefined professional wrestling as a whole in their instant five star classic.
As I mentioned before, Omega vs Okada had brilliant storytelling and having a match that tells a story is a very important factor in having a great match in wrestling. With Okada fighting for all of Japan while Omega was fighting for himself and Bullet Club to takeover NJPW, we could all feel that story being told with neither man wanting to give up and both men trying absolutely anything to reach the top of the mountain. With Kenny’s high risk actions to Okada’s multiple attempts at the Rainmaker, both men did a tremendous job at telling a story and it that is the biggest factor that made this match one of the greatest of all time.
I always tell myself, if you get people talking, you’ve done a good job. That is exactly what Omega and Okada did at Wrestle Kingdom XI. Once Okada got the final pin on Kenny Omega, the entire wrestling world was raving about the match in it’s entirety. From The Young Bucks to Xavier Woods to Tyler Breeze, every single person involved in wrestling had at least one thing to say about this match, whether it be good or bad. I have seen a lot of amazing matches in my days as a wrestling fan but never have I ever seen a match get as much talk on social media as Omega and Okada received. Professional wrestling can easily be defined by many factors, like storytelling, but if there is a match that gets every single wrestling fan talking, that is what defines wrestling even more than storytelling.
Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada set the wrestling world on fire at Wrestle Kingdom XI and even though it wasn’t the outcome many fans wanted, including myself, I will not deny that the quality of the match made the outcome irrelevant. Omega and Okada have set the tone for 2017 and I feel sorry for every single match that will happen during the rest of the year because not only was Omega vs Okada one of the matches of the year but it was arguably one of the greatest matches of all time.
Omega and Okada are the reason why I love professional wrestling and events like Wrestle Kingdom XI are what make wrestling one of the greatest thing on the face of this earth.
So thank you Kenny and Kazuchika. Thank you very much.
