According to a report in The Wrestling Observer by Dave Meltzer, the original plan for the Smackdown Woman’s Championship match called for Asuka to defeat Charlotte Flair.
The report states that there was a long term plan to build to an Asuka vs. Ronda Rousey match. Meltzer claims at one point Asuka was told to start using more armbar submissions, but was recently told to stop.
Coming out of WrestleMania, the plan now would appear to be to build to a major Charlotte-Rousey match either at SummerSlam or more likely WrestleMania next year.
As far as Asuka goes, there is no clear direction for her immediate future. There appears to be no plans for a “redemption” rematch between Charlotte and Asuka as of this time.
