Last night before WWE Monday Night RAW, WWE.com reported that John Cena suffered an ankle injury and his status for the WWE Royal Rumble was unclear.
In an update provided by The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, John Cena’s injury is indeed a storyline and he is not actually hurt.
The report claims that Cena was always going to the miss the Royal Rumble event due to a prior filming commitment. Originally, the plan was for Lars Sullivan to attack Cena and that would be how they’d take Cena off TV.
That would later lead to a WrestleMania match between the two, according to Meltzer. But after some backstage complications with Sullivan, WWE had to improvise.
Cena tweeted about his injury earlier today:
Setbacks are a large part of life. People often say “what a bad time to get hurt” or “I can’t believe this happened to me now” ask yourself, is there a good time to get hurt? Or be setback? Setbacks are just another chance to find triumph! Never give up!

It is unclear if WWE will return this idea once Sullivan and Cena are ready to be back on TV.
