WWE Night of Champions: A Look Back at Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena

WWE Night of Champions
It’s All About The Gold

PWP Nation’s Jay Alletto takes a look at the impact that the rematch between Brock Lesnar & John Cena had on the WWE from Night of Champions 2014.

Almost one year ago at Night of Champions 2014, John Cena went into battle with Brock Lesnar in a rematch from the most lopsided WWE World Heavyweight Championship match in history at SummerSlam.

At SummerSlam 2014, “Suplex City” was officially open for business as Brock Lesnar issued a barrage of 16 German Suplexes to John Cena as he completely decimated the champion. The rematch told a different tale.

As diehard WWE fans, we all knew that John Cena would come to fight…and he made that known in the weeks leading to this match. Fans might remember John Cena completely decimating The Wyatt Family on a Raw leading up to Night of Champions 2014. He first competed in a singles match against Bray Wyatt, where Wyatt was disqualified because Harper and Rowan stopped the pin.

This turned into a six-man tag as Big Show & Mark Henry made the save to join Cena in a match against The Wyatt Family. At the conclusion of this match, Cena made Luke Harper tap out, gave an Attitude Adjustment to Erick Rowan, Bray Wyatt and then another to Luke Harper! He completely destroyed The Wyatt Family and sent them into obscurity.

He was being built up once again as a strong competitor to take on Lesnar. He needed it so fans could believe that Cena would actually stand a chance against Lesnar. The match ended up telling a completely different story than the previous encounter at SummerSlam.

John Cena started the match off strong by hitting a quick Attitude Adjustment on Lesnar, but only getting a quick one count before “The Beast Incarnate” kicked out ferociously. Lesnar then quickly went on the offense and started to dominate Cena for the majority of the match.

Suplexes, Kamura Lock attempts and some vicious clotheslines were executed by Brock, but unlike SummerSlam, John Cena made a huge comeback during this contest. He hit ANOTHER Attitude Adjustment for a two-count and after a couple of reversals between the two competitors, Cena hit a THIRD Attitude Adjustment and locked in the STF!

Lesnar was showing some serious vulnerability at this point when Cena hit a FOURTH Attitude Adjustment! Just as it looked like Cena was about to finish off Lesnar, “Mr. Money in the Bank” Seth Rollins made his presence felt by breaking up the pin attempt!

Rollins assaulted Cena with the briefcase and issues a vicious Curb Stomp (RIP Curb Stomp) to Brock Lesnar! At this point, Justin Roberts (former WWE Ring Announcer) announced that Rollins was cashing in on Lesnar.

But here comes John Cena to the rescue! Cena chased off Rollins, the bell never rang, Lesnar recovers to F-5 Cena & The Money in the Bank Briefcase still belongs to Seth Rollins.

Lets make no mistake about it: this match was booked to get Cena his momentum back after being decimated by Lesnar the month before. Cena was technically the winner of the match, Lesnar retains the title by disqualification & Seth Rollins OFFICIALLY plugs himself into main event status from here on out.

The ripple effect from this match can be felt to this very day. Seth Rollins started his beef with not only John Cena, but an extremely pissed off Brock Lesnar.

At Royal Rumble 2015, Brock defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against John Cena & Seth Rollins in a surefire Match of the Year candidate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rollins eventually cashed in Money in the Bank at WrestleMania 31 by defeating both Brock Lesnar & Roman Reigns in an impromptu Triple Threat Match (he pinned Reigns) & John Cena didn’t get another crack at the WWE Championship for 7 months.

Heading into Night of Champions 2015, Seth Rollins is involved in two title matches as he defends his newly won United States Championship against John Cena & then his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Sting.

We can see clearly that Rollins started his major push towards the WWE World Heavyweight Championship by officially getting involved with Brock Lesnar at WWE Night of Champions 2014. The one major star that truly came out of this epic rematch between Lesnar & Cena was “The Architect” Seth Rollins!
