In a surprising move this past Monday on Raw, WWE is giving us Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins for the new WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam.
This replaces the long rumored Rollins vs. Roman Reigns match for the show. The match will definitely be one of the shows main events and could not only steal the show, but will no doubt be a MOTY candidate. The story will tell itself as far as both men wanting the Championship. There will also be the underlined story of Rollins appearing to be the favorite of Stephanie McMahon. As simple as that whole story would be, there is many more potential layers to this story and what the outcome and fall out could be.
What if we walked out of SummerSlam with the BALOR CLUB in full force? What if WWE pulled a major double turn with Rollins and Balor?
It would make sense for a multiple of reasons.
Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson will probably challenge the New Day for the Tag Titles at SummerSlam, and they will need a new direction with AJ Styles on SmackDown Live. The history with Balor and these two will be too big to ignore. Finn could reject the initial gestures to get back together, but it could all be a giant ruse with the big reveal at SummerSlam.
They could even tease offering their help to Rollins. Imagine the Balor Club with the Tag Team and Universal Championships with the backing of Stephanie and an eventual returning Triple H. Balor has always been seen as the top Triple H guy in NXT, and that could play a role in the story.
Speaking of Triple H, we could get the start of the build to the Rollins vs. Triple H match for WrestleMania, that was teased at times during Rollins’ initial title run in 2015.
If Roman Reigns is going to stay face, and a “redemption” storyline is in his future, then the “I want another shot at that guy” comment at the end of Raw is huge. Reigns going after Balor with the Club, while familiar, will tell a good story and would be a good fall/winter feud for Balor to establish his dominance as Champion.
Imagine at Survivor Series if The Balor Club & AJ Styles took on say John Cena, Dean Ambose, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. It’s been said that Vince McMahon is big on The Shield vs. The Club, so why not? And hey, if a little crack in the foundation between AJ and Balor starts, that will not be a bad thing either.
WWE is trying to create massive buzz and excitement with their new characters and storylines. This has potential to layout great TV from Summerslam until WrestleMania. Coming out of this, two of Wrestlemania’s biggest matches could be born: Seth Rollins vs. Triple H and Finn Balor (WWE Universal Champion) vs. AJ Styles, the 2017 Royal Rumble winner.
It would truly be a “New Era” for WWE.
